| June 2, 2003 UIS names first director of Abraham Lincoln Presidential Center
Dr. Dluhy, professor and chair of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington since 2000, was selected following a national search to fill the position. “As greater state and national attention is now focused on our Abraham Lincoln Presidential Center for Governmental Studies at UIS, we are especially pleased that someone with Dr. Dluhy’s leadership experience and scholarly credentials is taking the helm of the center,” said Provost Cheney. “We look forward to the opportunities for excellence he will create.” Dr. Dluhy will succeed Ernest Cowles, who has been interim director of the center. He will return to his positions as director of the UIS Institute for Legal, Administrative and Policy Studies and associate professor of criminal justice. A 1964 graduate of the U of I at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics, Dr. Dluhy received a master’s degree in government and public administration from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and a Ph.D. in political science and public policy from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. From 1987-2000, he taught public administration and social work and held a variety of administrative positions at Florida International University in Miami, including interim dean of the School of Public Affairs, associate director of the School of Policy and Management, director of the Florida Institute of Government, and director of the Doctoral Program in Public Administration. Before that, he was a research scientist and faculty member in the School of Social Work and the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan. He also served as a policy analyst in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1976-78. Dr. Dluhy is a member of the American Political Science Association, American Society for Public Administration, Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management, and Urban Affairs Association. He has authored/co-authored nine books and over 60 other journal articles and book chapters. He is also currently the book review editor for The American Review of Public Administration. The UIS Lincoln Center is a public policy center that serves as the academic partner of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The center works with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, and other local, state, and national organizations, to conduct applied research, education, and public service programs designed to enhance governmental effectiveness and citizens’ knowledge of public policy issues.
