General education requirements

The first sixty hours of lower division coursework (100 and 200 level courses) are generally devoted to general education courses in English, oral communication, humanities, social science, physical and life science, and mathematics. Ideally prerequisites for business majors should also be completed in the first sixty hours.

Campus undergraduate academic advisers are available to advise students concerning UIS general education requirements.

You can contact:

It is important for BBA students to meet with their academic adviser and set up a degree plan to insure that they meet catalog requirements for graduation including:

  • General education requirement
  • Foundation entrance requirements
  • College Core
  • Business Administration Core
  • Electives
  • UIS requirements

A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required for graduation. BBA degree candidates may not take any course on a credit/no credit or pass/fail basis. A grade of C or better must be earned in MGT 488.

Beginning in Fall 08, PAC and LSC courses will no longer be offered. For students who need the PAC or LSC hours to graduate, here is the process:

Students will have to petition to use an ECCE course to fulfill PAC and LSC university requirement hours. A list of approved ECCE courses is available on the UIS registration website under general education requirements. The ECCE courses are near the end of the document. Any 300 or 400 level US Communities or Global Awareness ECCE course can be used to fulfill the PAC and LSC requirement. Check that the course is 4 hrs. because you will have to complete the full 12 hr requirement.

The only exception for accepting any ECCE courses is if a student using the PAC/LSC/AST requirement has not completed any of the 12 hours before Fall 08. In that case the student will be required to complete ECCE courses in at least two of the three ECCE areas (U.S. Communities, Engagement, or Global).

The petition should include the following information:

  • The type of petition is a "Waiver"
  • In the request lines, please write "I request to use [course prefix and number] to fulfill my University Requirements."
  • In the rational lines, please write:  “I am graduating under the [state academic year; e.g. 2005-06] catalog. This course is an approved ECCE course, according to the Semester Course list on the General Education web site.
  • Student petitions are available at the UIS registration web site.
