The UIS Biology program has an effective applied study term that allows students to gain practical experience in a variety of areas. Placements have included state agencies such as the State Museum, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Conservation, the Department of Public Health, as well as SIU School of Medicine, Lincoln Memorial Gardens, and several private labs and businesses in the area. Students may also conduct research with biology faculty members for their AST.
It is expected that before students apply for an applied study they will have been at UIS long enough for letters of recommendation to be pertinent, and so that placements will match student abilities and enhance student skills. Because Springfield is the state capital, there are many Applied Study Position internships that help students gain valuable on-the-job experience. Several students have stayed on in their placements as full-time employees.
