In October 2005, Biology faculty members Amy McEuen and Gary Trammell were recognized by the university for their scholarly contributions in the publication of articles in their field of study.
Dr. Trammell was also recognized for a professional presentation of his work.
At this Luncheon, various faculty were recognized for their scholarly contributions in various categories. Honored for their contributions in writing articles were Lucia Vazquez, Amy McEuen, and Gary Trammell. Dr. Trammell also received recognition in the category of invited lectures and presentations, in addition to Michael Lemke and Gary Butler.
Tracy DiMezzo, who graduated from UIS in the spring of 2004 with a Master of Science in Biology degree, has received a 2005 MAGS Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award from the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools. Her thesis, Uptake Analysis of Fluorescently-Labeled Hydrophobic Organic Phosphate Substrates by Aquatic Hydrophobic Bacteria, had previously been awarded the UIS Outstanding Master’s Thesis for 2003-04. DiMezzo’s thesis was one of three winners chosen from among 56 nominations. (UIS News Bureau)
Mandy Cook, Doyn M. Kellerhals, and Tracy DiMezzo, UIS graduate students, traveled to the 2004 ASM General Conference in New Orleans with help from the Biology Gift Fund. All three presented poster sessions on their respective thesis topics and found the opportunity to meet with other scientists and potential job contacts.
Michael Lemke, assistant professor of Biology, was named University Scholar for 2002-2003. He was one of 14 faculty members, and the only one from UIS, chosen for this award honoring and rewarding outstanding teachers and scholars on the three U of I campuses. His professional activities connect him to Nobel Prize winners and other distinguished scientists and he has attracted national and international attention through his work on the editorial board of Microbial Ecology, a major journal in the discipline, and as a reviewer for Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
