ICWS Grant Program

The Illinois Cooperative Work Study Grant Program (ICWS) was established to provide financial assistance to Illinois institutions of higher education in order to support student cooperative work study programs.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education administers the program and distributes the funds in the form of grants to public and nonpublic institutions of higher education. The Applied Study Program has been a recipient of one of these grants for the past fifteen years.

If your agency or business wishes to participate in this program, please write a letter expressing that interest to:

Elaine Rundle-Schwark
Director and Grant Fiscal Officer
University of Illinois at Springfield
One University Plaza MS BRK 482
Springfield, Illinois 62703-5407

The letter must state that you realize your commitment would be $4.00 an hour for plus a small percentage for Workers' Compensation.

Students will be paid $5.00 an hour from the grant for a total of $9.00 an hour. The students will receive 6-8 semester hours of credit upon successful completion of the internship. Also include a job description and desired qualifications.

The students usually work 20 hours a week for 15 or 16 weeks or 37.5 - 40 hours a week for eight weeks during the summer semester. The students are paid through the University of Illinois at Springfield as Experiential Learning Assistants.

They may hold no other campus job during this internship. The scheduling of hours is decided by the agency. A contract between the agency and the university is signed. The agency matching money is billed by the university.

Interested undergraduate UIS students must have:

  • Status as an Illinois resident
  • UIS degree-seeking undergraduate status
  • Good academic standing
  • Completion of 3 courses in their major
  • Two UIS faculty references listed on their resume

Resumes are submitted to the AST office and forwarded to the business or agency. The types of internships vary from semester to semester, depending on employer need.

Detailed job descriptions can be found in the AST Resource Room. Descriptions are posted during these timeframes:

  • Mid-October to mid-November (spring internships)
  • Mid-March – mid-April (summer and fall internships)
