CAPE Award/Recognition Reception Report

Carly Shank reported that over 50 APs were in attendance at the May 18 ceremony, and that the event was well-received by APs and the chancellor’s department.  A thank you from Carly and Tom Ambrose has been sent to the chancellor.  With the expenses from this event, the AP account is now about $3 in the red.  APAC discussed the possibility of amending the document setting up the CAPE Award to make it possible for any member of the campus community (AP, Civil Service, faculty, students) to nominate an AP for the CAPE Award.  The committee will likely make this recommendation to the chancellor next spring when we are preparing to accept nominations for the second award.

Campus Senate Report

Barbara Cass reported that the Campus Planning and Budget committee presented their report to Campus Senate and salary equity for APs and Civil Service was the second highest issue on the report.  She also reported that a strategic planning committee to make recommendations toward mission and vision planning for UIS is being formed.  One AP representative is recommended for the committee.  Patti Sims will obtain data regarding the number of APs who also teach courses at UIS.  With this data, Tom Ambrose will contact Pat Langley to suggest more AP representation on this committee.

Salary Equity Survey

Wes Weisenburn reported that the AP Salary Equity Survey was submitted to Provost Cheney yesterday afternoon.  Tom Ambrose will request that Michael Cheney pass the survey onto APAC as soon as he has had a chance to look at it.  Assuming that the report will be received by APAC in a timely fashion, the full APAC committee will meet on Thursday, June 24 at 9 a.m. to discuss the survey and APAC’s next steps.  Past APAC chairs Barbara Ferrara, Deb Koua, Carol Bloemer, Jonathan GoldbergBelle, and Sherry Hutson will also be invited to this meeting.

Tuition Waivers

Mary Elizabeth Smith raised the question of why Civil Service employees at UIS may obtain a tuition waiver at any state university in Illinois, but APs may only obtain U of I tuition waivers.  Wes Weisenburn reported that policy 13 details tuition waivers.  While civil service employees are governed by the state-wide State University Civil Service system, there is no such similar umbrella organization governing APs.  It is likely that individual agreements would need to be made between UIS and each of the other state universities.  It was suggested that an email survey of the UIS AP constituency might give us an idea of whether this is an issue of interest to many APs; Carly Shank will take responsibility for this survey and report back next month.  Tom Ambrose will take this issue to UPPAC since it is an issue that involved APs university-wide.

Academic Technology Committee

Shari McCurdy reported that a study of possible IT reorganization on this campus has been requested by Michael Cheney.  In addition, UIS recently received a Sloan Grant to put 8 more degree programs online over the next four years.  Finally, she reported that there are many technology changes going into effect over the next few months and employees should pay close attention to emails about these changes.

CIC Report

Tom Ambrose reported that it was determined at the June 7 teleconference that a face-to-face meeting would be held in October (possibly 10-11) at the Big Ten Center, close to O’Hare in Chicago.
