Unpaid Internships: Win-Win for Everyone

Wayne and Margie Fox have generously funded an award for business students who demonstrate excellence in an unpaid internship. Many UIS students invest significant time in these internships, called Applied Study Terms.  The Fox Award acknowledges the excellent work of selected business students.

According to Wayne Fox, an unpaid internship is a “win-win situation for all involved.”

Students provide valuable service to community agencies and nonprofits, he says, and the internship “provides the intern with the opportunity to be actively involved in community affairs as a volunteer—a lifelong habit to be carefully cultivated and nurtured.”

This year the Fox Award has been presented to Jill Harbison and Sinem Aydin.

Sinem Aydin, Old State Capitol Historic Site

Sinem Aydin worked for the Old State Capitol State Historic site reconstructing its Facebook page and website, implementing ways to make the site appealing to all cultures. She assisted in organizing and reviewing the annual report, created a survey for local businesses to analyze results of tourist activity, recruited volunteers, and assisted with summer event planning.

As a result of her internship at OSC she has been offered a job at Pasfield House Inn (a Bed & Breakfast) to increase business through their website. Sinem anticipates completing her degree in December 2012.

Jill Harbison, Girl Scouts of Central Illinois

Jill Harbison helped with events and developed and maintained outreach with churches and schools, cultural groups, and service and professional organizations. All this enhanced visibility, fund raising, membership and program options for GSCI. She also record keeping and reporting and served girls directly through tutoring and scouting projects, as well as making presentations to build troop membership.

Jill completed her business administration degree in May and is now a graduate student in the Public Administration program as well as a Graduate Public Service Intern with the Illinois Department of Healthcare & Family Services.

Thank you!

Thank you, Wayne and Margie Fox, for such a thoughtful gift with such lasting results.
