Make a Difference for Online Students
- Grace Brorstrom Oakley Scholarship
- Leadership Human Services Scholarship
- Burks Oakley Online Learning Award
If you would like to support UIS’ award-winning online program, you can give to one of the funds below. Your gift will help us serve students around the world.
Grace Brorstrom Oakley dedicated much of her time to encouraging women and economically disadvantaged persons to achieve a secondary education. Before terminal illness claimed her life in the early’ 90s, Ms. Brorstrom Oakley had been instrumental in establishing several scholarships for this target population. The Grace Brorstrom Oakley Scholarship was established in 2003, by her son, UIS Research Profesor, Burks Oakley, II. Applicants for the scholarship must be part- or full-time, academically sound undergraduate students enrolled in an online degree program. In continuance of Ms. Oakley’s life mission, preference is given to single mothers who have returned to college after being out for a period of time.
Contributed by Dr. Denise Bockmier-Sommers, professor in the Human Services Department, this scholarship is for a graduate student in the College of Education and Human Services who is pursuing a Social Service Administration concentration, an online specialization. The recipient should have leadership qualities, with preference given to a student from an under-served population such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
You could also give in support of the following teaching award, which honors the high standard that our UIS faculty have set for online teaching. The award goes to a professor who has done a particularly good job teaching online.
Burks is also an award-winning, world-renowned online learning expert. These two men have a lot to do with UIS’ stellar ongoing success in online learning. They began these funds as just one more way to improve UIS’ program; when you give to the funds, you’ll be in great company!
