International Students

UIS provides support services including visa and immigration assistance, cultural adjustment programs and academic advising. Students have access to all services of the university including the Campus Health Center, Counseling Center, Career Services, Disability Services, Housing, and Student Life.

Below are the requirements for admission for international students:

  • Applicants must comply with the standard admission requirements for Undergraduate/Graduate applicants.

  • Applicants applying from abroad whose native language is not English must submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores as part of the English Proficiency Admission Requirements.

  • Applicants who have earned an associate's degree or higher in the United States with a GPA of 2.00 or better on a 4.00 scale are not required to submit international TOEFL scores.

    - Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum total score of:
    TOEFL - 500 PBT, 173 CTB, 61 iBT
    IELTS - 6.0 (academic module)

    - Graduate applicants must have a minimum total score of:
    TOEFL - 550 PBT, 213 CTB, 79-80 iBT
    IELTS - 6.5 IELTS (academic module).

    Some graduate programs may have higher TOEFL entrance requirements. (more information about ESL)

If you believe you meet the requirements for application to UIS, please follow these procedures:

  1. Complete the appropriate International Application for Admission form. This form can either be submitted electronically or downloaded and mailed to the Office of Admissions.

    If you apply electronically, you can check the status of your application online.

  2. Send official or certified academic records. Photocopies will not be accepted.

  3. Submit applicable personal and academic statements (required for freshman applicants, all other applicants should consult their chosen program of study for requirements).

  4. Submit all applicable test scores.

    - CLEP, GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL:
    institutional code for UIS is 1787
    - ACT: institutional code for UIS is 1137
    - AP and SAT: institutional code for UIS is 0834

  5. Please submit the non-refundable application fee for International Students:

    Please include a non-refundable $50 undergraduate application fee, or $75 graduate application fee, payable to the University of Illinois at Springfield.

    Students at a Soccer game at the University of Illinois at SpringfieldStudents who are not U.S. citizens must have a tuberculin skin test done at the Campus Health Service office on arrival and prior to registering. If the test is positive, you will be required to have a chest x-ray.

  6. International students who have had a positive tuberculin skin test in the past are required to bring a statement from the health care provider who performed the test, giving the date of the test and the size of the induration in millimeters. You will be required to have a chest x-ray when you arrive on campus.

  7. All medical records must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

  8. Deadlines: International students applying from abroad should submit complete files by:
    - June 1 for fall terms;
    - November 1 for spring terms; and
    - April 1 for summer sessions.

  9. International Students must also submit a Financial Affidavit form [PDF].

  10. English Proficiency Admission Requirements

    Applicants applying from abroad whose native language is not English must submit official TOEFL scores.

    • Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum total score of:
      TOEFL - 500 PBT, 173 CTB, 61 iBT
      IELTS - 6.0 (academic module)
    • Graduate applicants must have a minimum total score of:
      TOEFL - 550 PBT, 213 CTB, 79-80 iBT
      IELTS - 6.5 IELTS (academic module).

       

    NOTE: Some graduate programs may have higher English entrance requirements. For example: the English A view of the UIS Campusprogram requires a score of 600PBT, 250 CBT, 100 iBT, or 7.0 IELTS (academic module); the Communication program requires a score of 580 PBT, 237 CBT, 92 iBT, or 7.0 IELTS (academic module); and, the Public Administration program requires a score of 575 PBT, 233 CBT, 90 iBT, or 7.0 IELTS (academic module)- as well as scores from TSE (Test of Spoken English) and TWE (Test of Written English). Completion of ESL will not satisfy this requirement for Public Administration.

    Please see the specific requirements for the program you wish to study to be sure you meet their requirements.

  11. Applicants whose TOEFL scores do not satisfy UIS' English proficiency requirement are encouraged to attend UIS' Intensive Summer Program for English Language and/or classes offered during the school year.

  12. Upon receipt of all of the above, the UIS admissions staff will review your application and notify you accordingly.
