Graduate Program Application Requirements

Human Development Counseling, MA

The Human Development Counseling (HDC) Program bases its educational program on a belief in the inherent worth and dignity of each person; in the importance of developing self awareness and continuing personal growth throughout the lifespan; in the need to enhance skills in self expression, self management, and interpersonal relations; and in the need to understand and experience diversity across cultures and subcultures. The program expects graduates to be able to help persons as individuals, couples, or as members of a family system to cope successfully with life tasks throughout their lifespans in our pluralistic society.

In addition to completing the UIS application for graduate study, applicants are expected to complete the program application (available below), submit three references using the reference form available below, and arrange for an interview. Applicants may also submit GRE General Test Scores.

To be eligible for full admission to the master of arts program in human development counseling applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree with a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework and satisfactorily completed undergraduate courses in abnormal psychology, developmental psychology (child, adolescent, adult, lifespan), and sociology or social psychology. (Courses taken within the past ten years with a grade of C or better or passing score on HDC-administered competency examination can satisfy this requirement.) Graduate students enrolling in these prerequisite courses at UIS are advised to register for credit/no credit.
