Rachael Harlow, Future Scholarship Donor

Rachael Harlow Rachael Harlow, Honors student and English major at UIS, plans on teaching after graduation. “I want to enrich the lives of my future students,” she says, “and help them succeed in the world.” To become the best teacher possible, she has taken four years of Spanish and two years of American Sign Language.

When she teaches, she will undoubtedly pass on her commitment to volunteering. At UIS, she helps with Special Olympics, Trick or Treat for Canned Goods, and the Forever Home Feline Ranch in Springfield. At home, she volunteers at the local food pantry and nursing homes.

To help fund her education, Rachael works in a local grocery store during the summer, but during the school year the Kathryn G. Patton Scholarship allows her more time to focus on learning—”the most important aspect of school.”

“My mother is a single parent supporting both me and my sister through college,” she says. “The scholarship has helped me immensely and has inspired me to help others in the community. I hope one day to be able to help students achieve their dreams just as Kathryn G. Patton has helped me.”
