Professional Roles and Responsibilities - Faculty and Academic Professional Staff

Accommodation of Students with Documented Disabilities

The Office of Disabilty Services (ODS) provides academic accommodations to students with documented disabilities to assist them in succeeding in college-level courses through a variety of support services. In collaboration with the ODS, UIS faculty and staff have the following rights and responsibilities:

UIS has the right to:

  • Identify and establish standards for all University courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities and evaluate students on this basis;

  • Request and receive current documentation supporting requests for accommodations;

  • Deny a request for accommodations if documentation demonstrates an unwarranted request or if appropriate documentation is not provided;

  • Select among equally effective accommodations;

  • Refuse an accommodation that compromises academic standards, poses undue hardship, or affects the safety of others.

UIS has the responsibility to:

  • Provide information to students with disabilities in accessible formats when requested;

  • Ensure that University offerings, when viewed in their entirety, are available and usable in the most integrated and appropriate settings;

  • Evaluate students on their abilities, not their disabilities;

  • Provide or arrange reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in University functions;

  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of records and communications, and to disclose where permitted or required by law.
