Institutional Review Board for Protection of Human Subjects (IRB)
The campus has created an Institutional Review Board for Protection of Human Subjects to screen and review all research projects involving human subjects. All such research projects must undergo a review and approval process. The IRB is chaired by the associate vice chancellor for graduate education and research, who has been designated by the chancellor as the human subjects review officer, and includes five other members including one from the community at large. The chancellor appoints the five members for three-year terms.
The IRB attempts to educate the campus community about the importance of protecting the rights of human subjects. The grants and contracts coordinator, who serves as staff to the IRB, is available to make presentations on key concepts of the ethics of research and related UIS policies and procedures. Protocol forms and further information are available on the Grants and Contracts homepage.
Institutional Committee for the Care and Use of Animals (ICCUA)
In addition to the IRB, campus policies provide for an Institutional Committee for the Care and Use of Animals (ICCUA) to enforce ethical, humane guidelines for the use of live animals in research. The committee reviews all protocols for laboratory or classroom use of live animals to ensure compliance with humane standards and federal regulations. All research involving animals must undergo ICCUA review. The ICCUA meets yearly and as needed to review research projects. The committee consists of eight members: two from the community, four UIS faculty, a staff veterinarian, and the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The committee chair is elected every year from among the committee members. With the exception of the dean, the members are appointed by the chancellor and serve three-year terms.
