CAMPUS Health and Safety Committee

MISSION AND CHARGE:

The mission of the University Health and Safety Committee is to foster a safe environment for all campus constituencies and visitors. The primary responsibility of the committee is to address significant health and safety issues in campus programs and facilities, and to take timely action to implement appropriate corrective actions to protect the campus/University from predictable/avoidable citations and unnecessary liability. The committee is advisory to the campus Safety Officer and ultimately to the Vice Chancellor Administrative Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review and respond to external agency regulatory standards and concerns.
  • Review and analyze the injury/incident reports and address those that suggest improved safety standards.
  • Recommend changes to campus policies and procedures.
  • Work with and support the campus safety officer to assure compliance with health and safety measures across campus.
  • Coordinate and counsel with individuals and other campus or University safety units/teams who have special expertise or who raise health and safety issues.
  • Respond to health and safety concerns communicated by members of campus constituencies.
  • Review and analyze injury/incident forms procedures and propose simplified and consistent reporting.

The committee shall also consider and/or facilitate educational programs such as workshops and special training sessions that are mandated or will help develop awareness and understanding of sound health and safety practices, and promote safe and health lifestyles.

COMMITTEE AND MEETINGS:

  • Campus Safety Officer (Chair)
  • Police chief (or designee)
  • Campus Health Service Supervisor
  • Human Resource Staff - Employee Injury / Workmen’s Compensation
  • Chemical Hygiene Officer (LAS)
  • Division Representatives (At the discretion of each Division Head)

(Office staff, Dean, Director, Unit head, faculty member, constituency representative, student, other, no representative)

  • Chancellor
  • Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs & Provost
  • Vice Chancellor Student Affairs
  • AVP Business and Finance/VC Administrative Services

Meeting shall be held at least once per quarter at the call of the Chair. Minutes shall be coordinated with all meeting attendees and the final minutes provided to the committee members, with copies to other attendees and the Vice Chancellor Administrative Services.
