Workplace Accommodations

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities is prohibited in job application procedures, hiring, advancement, discharge, compensation, job training, or other terms, conditions and privileges of employment. Under ADA qualified individuals are those with a disability who, with or without reasonable accommodation, can perform the essential functions of the position that they apply for or hold.

A reasonable workplace accommodation may include the following:

  • making existing facilities used by such employees readily accessible to and functional for individuals with disabilities; and/or
  • job restructuring, the adaptation of part-time or modified work schedules, reassignment to a vacant position, acquisition or modification of equipment or devices, appropriate adjustment or modification of examinations, training materials or policies, the provision of qualified readers or interpreters, and other similar accommodations.

For further information contact Human Resources (6-7143) and Disability Services (SLB 11, 6-6666). There is also a Campus Senate Committee on ADA which examines related policy issues (PAC 384, 6-6664).
