Emergencies
UIS Police Department
The campus police department is located in the Police Department Building (PDB), is operational 24 hours a day, and is open 7 days a week.
For help with the following emergencies, call the campus police at 6-7777. For non-emergencies, call the campus police at 6-6690.
Fire
If you see a fire, smell smoke, or receive a report of the same
- Pull the nearest fire alarm and exit the building.
- Call campus police and give them your name, building, location or area of fire, and if known, type and extent of fire.
Verifying
When the campus police arrive, the person who called in the alarm, or those with information regarding the fire, should communicate the following information to the campus police officer:
- Location of fire or suspected problem
- Areas of the building that were checked
- Location and physical description of anyone still in the building (handicapped, elderly, or refused to leave)
- Any blocked areas, injured or trapped person(s).
Medical
If a medical emergency (i.e., illness, injury, or accident) occurs on campus, notify the campus police and:
- Give the police your name; name of the victim, if known; nature of illness, injury, or accident; specific location of the victim; and any other necessary information requested.
- The campus police will then summon and facilitate emergency services personnel (i.e., campus nurse, fire department, ambulance, etc.).
Weather
Severe weather or tornado
Watches and warnings apply not only to tornadoes, but also to high winds, rain, thunderstorms, hail, etc.
- A Watch weather conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop. Keep alert for further weather developments and be prepared to take shelter.
- A Warning threatening weather conditions are imminent or occurring in, or near, our area (sighted or indicated by radar).
- For current weather information, locate and listen to the nearest weather alert radio in your area. This radio will emit an alarm tone when emergency information is about to be broadcast.
- Go to a designated shelter area immediately; take a weather alert radio with you, if available, and listen for further weather developments.
- Do not use the fire alarm system for weather alert notification.
Bomb Threat Notify the campus police department immediately.
Telephone threat
- Stay calm and keep the caller on the line as long as possible.
- Try to get as much information as possible.
- Take notes, record the conversation verbatim.
- Listen to the caller’s voice.
- Listen for background noise.
- Ask the following questions: time set to detonate, location, type of explosive, what it looks like, reason person placed it.
Written threat
Once you realize it’s a bomb threat, avoid handling the material further. Save all materials, including any envelope or container.
Letter and package bombs
If you suspect a package or container of being a bomb, leave the item alone and notify the campus police immediately.
Chemical Spill
Emergency chemical or hazardous material spills should be handled as a fire emergency.
Call the campus police department for spills that:
- Involve injury requiring medical treatment;
- Are potentially life threatening;
- Involve fire or explosion hazards;
- Are of an unknown chemical;
- Are non-incidental chemical spill situations;
- You have any questions or doubts about your ability to clean up;
- You do not have proper training or proper protective equipment to do the cleanup.
