Facilities

Brookens Auditorium

Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower-level concourse that connects the Public Affairs Center and Brookens Library, seats 192 people and is fully equipped with a UIS computer network connection, telephone line, 35 mm movie projector system, and satellite connection. A full-size on-stage screen accommodates front and rear projection programs, blackboard presentations and audio programs. This auditorium also accommodates interactive videoconferences and has a control booth from which on-stage video cameras can be directed. This facility is utilized for classes as well as conferences and is reserved through Conference Services.

Conference Facilities

Conference facilities are primarily available on Level 1 of the PAC. Conference Services is responsible for scheduling conference rooms (6-6073).

Cultural and Entertainment

Sangamon Auditorium

The Sangamon Auditorium, located on Level 2 of the PAC, is a 2,018-seat proscenium theater that annually hosts national touring companies in music, theater, and dance. It is also the performing home of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and the Springfield Ballet Company. The Auditorium performances are open to the public. UIS students may use i-Card accounts to purchase tickets and any college or high school student with current ID can purchase rush tickets to applicable auditorium-sponsored events at half-price on the day of the show. Tickets and information can be obtained by calling or visiting the auditorium ticket office or online at the web site listed below. Mastercard, VISA, American Express, and Discover are accepted.

Studio Theatre

The UIS Studio Theatre, located on Level 1 of the PAC, is a multipurpose performance space equipped with modest theatrical lighting and a sprung floor appropriate for dance performances. It is used extensively for both conferences and performing arts productions. Sangamon Auditorium is responsible for scheduling the Studio Theatre.

  • Features
    • The Studio Theatre’s 318 fixed seats (172 main floor, 146 balcony,) are arranged in a three-quarter round configuration. Additional chairs can be added to the center floor area, for a maximum capacity of 375 persons.
    • The Studio Theatre is home to the UIS Theatre and Music programs
    • Community groups can also rent the theatre

Visual Arts Gallery

The Visual Arts Gallery, as part of the university's broad educational goals, operates under the aegis of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, providing varied exhibitions of art by emerging and established contemporary artists. The exhibitions, activities, written materials and events provided by the gallery afford the citizens of Springfield an opportunity for deeper understanding of visual art. Exhibits change monthly and are open to the public at no charge. Receptions and special events offer the opportunity for the community to meet with professional artists and discuss their work.

Lounges
Everson Study Lounge

The Everson Study Lounge was established through a donation by two alumni in recognition of the contributions of faculty members David and Judith Everson. It is located in the southwest corner of Brookens Library second level and provides patrons with a location to read or study. A music collection consisting of compact disks and playing equipment is also available there for patrons’ use. No food or beverages are allowed in this area.

Friedman Reading Lounge

The Friedman Reading Lounge is a location for recreational reading, small group events, or class use. The lounge contains books and periodicals that complement materials in the main collection. Seating capacity is approximately 16 persons. The lounge, a gift from members of the Friedman family in honor of Ruth and Lester Friedman, is located on the fourth level of the Library. No food or beverages are allowed in this area.

Mary Jane's Cafe

Mary Jane's is located in the lower level of Brookens Library. Named in honor of Mary Jane McDonald, the first librarian hired at Brookens Library, the cafe offers coffee, pastries, and light lunches in a contemporary setting. Seating capacity is approximately 45 persons.

PAC Restaurant

The PAC Restaurant is located on Level 1 of the Public Affairs Center and can be scheduled through Conference Services (6-6073).

Housing and Residential Life

Student housing options at UIS include residence halls, apartments and townhouses, and family housing. The UIS Housing Office also maintains limited information about off-campus accommodations.

Homer L. Butler Commons

The Commons is located in the student housing apartment East complex. Facilities include a meeting room suitable for groups of up to 25, a TV room with a large screen TV, a kitchen, and a great room/lounge with a fireplace. The central Housing Office is also located in the Commons.

Policy generally restricts use of housing facilities to housing-related resident functions, academic programs, or student activities sponsored by registered student clubs and organizations. Space reservations can be initiated directly with the Housing Office (6-6190). The Housing Office does retain final scheduling authority over the Commons facility.
