Engaged Citizenship Common Experience
Speakers Series
The Speakers Series is a one-hour course that is part of the Engaged Citizenship Common Experience (ECCE), the distinctive set of courses taken by undergraduates at UIS to foster the appreciation for and practice of diversity and the active effort to make a difference in the world. The Speakers Series is designed to complement the other categories of coursework in the curriculum.
The Speakers Series supplements the learning that occurs in the other ECCE coursework and reflects the aims of the curriculum. To receive one hour of credit, students must attend or participate in four lectures or events and reflect on them in writing. Students have a series of lectures to choose from each semester.
UIS offers both on-ground and on-line degree programs, so lectures and events are offered in a variety of formats. In some cases online students will be encouraged to participate in real time by listening and asking questions using Elluminate web-based conferencing.
Alternatively, with the speaker's approval, lectures can be digitally recorded so that Live Webcasts can be produced and saved as Video On Demand for UIS students enrolled in the Speakers Series course.
The UIS Office of Undergraduate Education will work with the speaker or the speaker's agent to determine the appropriate honorarium for services rendered. Honoraria are subject to University of Illinois guidelines.
The UIS Office of Undergraduate Education can assist speakers with travel arrangements, including hotel reservations and transportation to and from the airport. The staff can make hotel reservations and hold them on the university credit card; speakers then pay for the room with their own credit cards and submit the receipts for reimbursement. The UIS staff can assist in determining the best flights into and out of Springfield, but speakers should make flight arrangements using their own credit cards and submit the receipts for reimbursement.
The University of Illinois has a standard contract form UIS needs to execute that includes contractor certification clauses required by the State of Illinois. For speakers who have a contract form, the UIS Office of Undergraduate Education can incorporate that document as an addendum to the UIS contract.
As a state government entity, the University's practice is not to pay before services are rendered. However, the UIS Office of Undergraduate Education can arrange for a check for the speaking fee to be mailed to the speaker the day after the speaking engagement. UIS reimburses travel expenses upon receipt of an itemized list of expenditures and original receipts. Meal expenses are reimbursable at a prescribed per diem rate.
The primary audience for the speakers is undergraduate students, although interested faculty, staff members, and graduate students, and even community members, may attend the lectures. Students are encouraged to take the Series while completing or after having completed at least one other ECCE course. The lecture may touch on any of the aims of the curriculum, which include helping students to:
Recognize the social responsibility of the individual within a larger community.
Practice awareness of and respect for the diversity of cultures and peoples in this country and in the world.
Reflect on the ways involvement, leadership, and respect for community occur at the local, regional, national, or international levels.
Identify how economic, political, and social systems operate now and have operated in the past.
Engage in open-minded and ethical decision-making and action.
Distinguish the possibilities and limitations of social change.
Students may need terms defined, and theoretical discussions will likely be most useful to the audience when presented in clear and straightforward language.
ECCE is an interdisciplinary curriculum, and so offering multiple perspectives or discussing the intersections of disciplinary approaches is encouraged.
Speaking events may range in length, but should fall between 30 to 60 minutes. Speakers should be open to questions and are encouraged to use interactive approaches that involve the audience in discussion and/or in activities related to the topic.
Speakers may choose from a range of technology to support the event, including computer and projector, DVD or VCR, internet access, overhead projector, slide projector, etc. If speakers prefer, they may bring laptops; projector hook-up will be available. Technology assistance will be provided by UIS staff.
UIS plans to audio and videotape all lectures presented in the Speaker Series to permit live webcasting and to make available video on demand, audio podcasts, and DVDs after the event. Speakers must agree to the recording of their presentations for these educational purposes.
The UIS Office of Undergraduate Education is responsible for arranging four lectures each semester for the Speakers Series. Staff in the office oversee the registration of students, record student attendance, and organize the evaluation of student reflections on the lectures. Staff members include:
