African-American studies explores the creation and development
of Black life, history, and culture in the United States.
The program provides an interdisciplinary examination of the directions and trends of African-American
culture
and experience, from the arrival of the first Africans on the shores of
North America to the complexities of contemporary American society. In addition, the program explores the culture
and
history of African
civilization and examines the African diaspora
in Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle
East. Students enrolled
in African-American studies will receive a broad education
in
the appreciation of ethnicity, culture, history, and
political and
social philosophy.
