Foreword

This revised handbook is intended as a general guide for the faculty and academic staff of the University of Illinois at Springfield.  Some policies, procedures and information affect all three campuses of the U of I, while others are specific to UIS.  I believe that you will find this handbook useful in understanding the ways in which our campus is governed by system-wide policies and the ways in which UIS has adopted specific practices to meet our unique circumstances.

The UIS faculty is a distinguished group of teacher-scholars.  The UIS academic staff is dedicated, loyal and exceptionally capable.  Our vision is to work together to make UIS the best small public liberal arts university in the region, if not the nation.

Chancellor Richard D. Ringeisen

How to Use this Handbook

This handbook provides an overview of facilities, services, policies, and procedures as well as access to sources of further information for both new and on-going employees at the University of Illinois at Springfield.  It is arranged in a user-friendly format, beginning with a campus map and information on emergencies.

To begin using the handbook consult the master Table of Contents in this section.  There also is a Table of Contents for each of the main sections of this handbook, at the beginning of each section.

Within the main sections of the handbook, the reader will generally find two kinds of material

  • brief narrative statements describing the nature, function, and contact point of each relevant office or service; and

  • pertinent institutional policies and procedures, either summarized, excerpted, linked, or reproduced in full in the text or provided in the appendices.

Where there is a reference to an appendix, it is in the Appendices section of this handbook.

Readers seeking additional information can contact the designated office or individual or consult supporting documents available through the provost, the vice chancellor for student affairs, and the UIS Information Center in Brookens Library.  University-wide policies can be found at:  http://www.vpaa.uillinois.edu/policies/.

Unless otherwise specified:

  • the area code for phone numbers is 217; the full prefix for campus phone numbers is 206.

  • the general hours of operation for campus offices are Monday – Friday, 8:30 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.

Cross-references in the text should help the reader locate related information more readily.  Although every effort has been made to assure the accuracy of the handbook’s content and the adequacy of its coverage, it will continue to need periodic revision.  With availability of the Handbook online, updates will be made on a regular basis.  You can help improve future editions of the handbook by sending suggested additions, deletions, and corrections to the Provost’s Office (PAC 528, 6-6614).
