Spring 2008 Elections Resolution

Resolution to Rename TRAC

  • Arguments in favor of renaming TRAC:
The Recreation and Athletic Center (TRAC) is an accurate portrayal of what the building is. However, it is not an accurate portrayal of who the building is for. This facility was constructed with money from student fees, and therefore should in some way indicate the students’ contribution to the campus. Just as the lobby area is called the Hoogland Atrium because of the generous donation of the Hoogland family, the entire building should be given a name chosen by the students to show their “ownership” of it.

Furthermore, there have been complaints about the name being redundant and somewhat confusing. This occurs when it is referred to as “The TRAC.” In other words, some call it “The The Recreation and Athletic Center.” Since the name causes this sort of redundancy, it should be renamed so that UIS, as an institution of higher education, does not become accustomed to a misuse of simple grammar.

  • Arguments opposed to renaming TRAC
The generic name “TRAC” leaves the option of renaming the building at a later date after generous (and large) donations have come in to enable further builds. Renaming it now takes away one more tool that fundraisers have for finding new donors.

In terms of grammar, it is not the name that is the problem, but rather the use of it. Changing the name of the building is excessive when all that is needed is to change the misuse of grammar on campus.

Furthermore, this is not that big of an issue. The majority of students are probably just happy to have a recreation center. They don’t really care what it is called as long as it has what they need inside.
