To tell you a little about myself, I am a junior transfer student from Lake Land College and I am majoring in Political Science and Legal Studies. I have interned for two United States Senators and while at LLC, I was the News and Opinion Editor for the campus newspaper.
Now to the million dollar question: Why am I running for SGA Senator-at-Large? The main reason is simple: money. A student at UIS currently pays well over $600 dollars in student fees per semester. We as students simply cannot tolerate an increase in fees. Not only does it put an undue burden on the already cash strapped student but also the hard working families that help to support UIS students. I believe that you will be hard pressed to find a candidate in this race (or a student for that matter) who supports an increase in fees, but the real question becomes how do we make our money work more efficiently? How does UIS do more with less?
If I am elected, I will be committed to making sure that we find the biggest bang for our buck. A review of what the University considers “necessary” spending is very much needed. While we look at spending, we also have to make sure that excellence is maintained. Just because we are facing financial challenges is no reason to decrease the high quality educational experience that accompanies a University of Illinois degree.
I look forward to meeting you in the weeks to come. I ask for your support, but most importantly I ask for you to simply vote. These are issues that affect you on a daily basis and your voice needs to be heard. If elected, I will make sure your voice is heard loud and clear.
