My name is Derek Felix, and I am running for the position of Senator to the college of Business and Management. I am currently a sophomore as well as a double major in Business Administration and Accounting. The most important thing to me as a person is to fight for what I believe in and I intend to do the same for everyone I represent. I see this opportunity as one where I can learn valuable lesions as well as help people. I also have experience with the SGA because last year I served on the campus Sabbatical and Awards committee.
I do not believe in the word promise because I think it is over used and has lost its meaning, but here are some of the issues that I would like to take up. One of the largest disadvantages that students have here at UIS is our GPA scale. Most schools base their GPA scales on a system with no pluses or minuses, but UIS does. This makes for an unfair advantage in favor of students at other schools when trying to apply for graduate school. I believe that all letter grades should weigh the same amount when our GPA is calculated. One other subject I know not only bothers me but has affected almost everyone on campus is our parking system. The campus as a whole needs to be more informed of what the policies are to avoid future problems.
I love meeting new people and I am always up for a conversation. I believe that I have the skills necessary to communicate with everyone because all of my work experience has involved me working directly with the public.
