Name: Amy Quarton
Year in School: 4th year
Candidate for the Position of: Senator: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
My undergraduate education in psychology has showed me the importance of community service. Currently, I am interning in the Office of the Governor. For three years, I have been a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters. In the past, I have volunteered with the Southern Illinois Human Society, Free Again Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and the National High School Rodeo. In addition, I tutored at Lincoln Land Community College and participated in research as an assistant in the Integrative Neuroscience Laboratory at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. My experience with these organizations represents my need to help others.
I want to be a part of the SGA for one reason: to help you. To help you get answers to your questions, to help you communicate your concerns to the appropriate people, and to help you voice your suggestions. Yes, I have great ideas, but you have better ones. And I want to hear them. A Senator’s purpose is to represent the student body by listening to and communicating with the students. If elected, I promise to be approachable so that you feel comfortable in sharing your thoughts with me.
In order to be an effective representative, lines of communication must be opened and maintained. You need to know who your representatives are, how to contact them, and what they are doing to improve the university and your education. One of the ways I would like to increase awareness is by taking advantage of the organization’s website. It needs to be updated on a regular basis and used to facilitate more on-line communication between students and the SGA.
Volunteer experience develops helping skills. I have the skills and the desire to make become an outstanding SGA Senator. With your vote, I can begin to help this university fulfill its potential.
