UIS Students,

Over the last few years we have seen many changes at UIS and many changes to the way your Student Government works. Today we are at a crossroads, where we see that reforms are needed within the SGA to make it more accountable, more reliable, and more capable of doing work in the future. In order for us to continue working in your best interest we have come up with changes to our own constitution that will allow us to prepare for the future needs of the students and for the needs of UIS as a whole.

Our current constitution has served us well for several years and has been able to perform well; we saw that it needed some changes. Most of the changes are minor technical changes that clarify confusing points, eliminate old language, and clean up other areas. However there are some major changes being made as well. These are described below.

  • We have changed the requirements to be President and Internal-Vice President so that these positions are better able to represent students through experience and dedication. For the position of President, a student must serve on SGA for at least one academic year. For Internal Vice-President, a student must serve at least one semester on SGA.
  • We are establishing permanent committees on Student Fees, Housing, and Food Services so that SGA can have a degree of oversight in these areas and further represent student needs.
  • We have established a policy so that SGA members can be removed from office if they miss more than three meetings. This change will allow us to ensure that people who are holding office will attend and do their job.
  • We have also changed the appointment process of the Student Activities Committee (SAC) and the Student Organization Funding Association (SOFA). This new process involves both the SGA Treasurer and the Internal Vice-President and will ensure that accountability and openness will occur with these two appointments.

These changes are important and we urge you to vote yes on them on your ballot so that your SGA will be better able to work for you and represent UIS to the highest standard.

Sincerely,

The University of Illinois Springfield Student Government Association
