From the Director
Please join me in celebrating the 2009-2010 season. The program is diverse, and the quality is high. You will recognize some familiar trends, though.
We are providing you opportunities to experience a variety of cultures from our convenient and comfortable theatre seats. Note especially, the first U.S. tour of the Irish Guard and the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Regiment of Scotland directly from Buckingham Palace or the amazing Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Emalia Hernandez from Mexico City.
Since those in attendance loved the spectacular 100 Years of Broadway Program in October of 2008, we have decided to present 101 Years of Broadway, but with an adjudication process that will permit up to ten of our finest local musical theatre performers to participate in the performance.
Want to arrive early, get the best parking, and enjoy a fine dinner before the performance? We are collaborating with the UIS Alumni Association SAGE Society to present three pre-performance dinners.
And how about classical programming? Academy of St. Martin in the Fields featuring Julian Rachlin, viola/violin, The Guthrie Theatre and Acting Company in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and the Moscow Festival Ballet featuring solo performances and various pas de deux from the greatest works ever created for ballet will grace our new stage floor.
We are and will continue partnering with campus units, corporate leaders, public and private advocates, and area community organizations to help us realize our mission. I am very interested in involving you and yours in our effort, as well. There are volunteer opportunities, or you may or your business may become a Friend of Sangamon Auditorium at a giving level to meet your available resources.
Perhaps your interest is in popular artists or Broadway. Opportunities abound including Cabaret, the new Cirque Dreams production never before seen in Springfield, Avenue Q, Brian Wilson, Garrison Keillor, the Wizard of Oz, and more.
There are family events, performances by technical virtuosos, and even a performance of a newly-created Native American Dance and Music piece.
Once again, I invite you to design the package that suits your needs, interests, and dreams. The University of Illinois – Springfield offers you the opportunity to experience. Come and share the fun and grow with us!
