What’s New in the Psychology Department
Internship 0pportunity at Davidson College, NC

For sophomore and junior psychology majors:
Davidson College sponsors an eight-week summer academic program for undergraduates at Broughton Hospital in Morganton, N.C., a state psychiatric facility serving western North Carolina. The program is an internship in clinical settings at the Hospital; students earn credit for one course from Davidson College as Practicum in Psychology (PSY 290). This course is taught by the Internship Training Director at Broughton Hospital who is an adjunct instructor for Davidson College.
Besides working in the hospital, students have periodic discussion sessions with the instructor and attend a weekly seminar with presentations by clinical staff at the Hospital.
Because these times are arranged once the class arrives in Morganton, students should plan on being on site five days a week for the duration of the program. The program will run from May 27 – July 18, 2014.
Participants work with hospital professionals as observers and assistants in patient treatment programs. Students may have the opportunity to participate in other hospital trainings and/or field trips to settings where activities relevant to clinical psychology are occurring. Service to the hospital is an important aspect of all placement options. In past years placement options have included the Adult Admissions Division, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Division, or Specialty Services Division, which includes the adolescent, geropsychiatry, and medical units.
Program size is 6-8 students. The number of applications for the program has progressively increased over the last several years. Criteria for admission, therefore, are driven in part by the number of applicants and can become competitive. Applications from students enrolled at Davidson College will receive some preferential weighting. Applicants should have completed Abnormal Psychology prior to the program’s start.
Tuition and room fees total $800. No financial aid from Davidson College is available; students needing financial help should inquire at their home institutions.

- Summer 2014 Graduates who DO wish to participate in the Spring 2014 Commencement Ceremony – February 21, 2014*
- Summer 2014 Graduates who DO NOT wish to participate in the Spring 2014 Commencement Ceremony – July 7, 2014
*A student petition signed by your adviser and department chair approving your participation in the Spring 2014 Commencement Ceremony is also required by February 21, 2014, in order to participate.

The Department of Child and Family Development at San Diego State University is now accepting applications for admission in Fall 2014. Their department offers two graduate-level programs:
• Early Childhood Socio-Emotional and Behavior Regulation Intervention Specialist (EC-SEBRIS) Graduate Certificate Program: The EC-SEBRIS Graduate Certificate Program is an interdisciplinary program focusing on professional preparation and skills enhancement of early childhood professionals who work with young children who demonstrate socio-emotional and behavioral concerns, and their parents. This is a one-year eighteen-unit certificate program.
• Master of Science Degree in Child Development: The focus of the program is on the early years and prevention with an emphasis on parent-child intergenerational relationships to enhance school readiness and prepare teachers to work with families with a focus on socio-emotional and behavior support in educational settings and homes. Taken independently, this program can be completed in two years (four academic semesters). Students who complete the EC-SEBRIS program can continue to the M.S. in Child Development and complete the M.S. in as few as two academic semesters.
Admission is accepted in the fall semester only. Applications will be available October 1, 2013 – March 1, 2014 for admission in Fall 2014. To apply, applicants need to complete an application to San Diego State University and an application to the Department of Child and Family Development. The UIS Cox Children’s Center (posted December 11, 2013)
The UIS Cox Children’s Center is currently looking to hire a few individuals for the spring semester who have an interest in working in a career with children and families. They will also be looking for individuals who will be living in Springfield and available to work over the summer. The Center is a resource for university students, faculty, staff, alumni and community clients. Their programs are designed to provide early childhood care and education for children 6 weeks to 12 years of age. During the academic year they enroll children ages 6 weeks to 5. In the summer, they add a school age summer camp for those ages 5-12. The Center also serves as a site for practicum experiences for university students seeking hands-on learning in the field of early childhood education. The Center is an NAEYC accredited program and that also holds a Star Level 3 certification through INCCRRA-both of these agencies being associated with high quality programs. The Center has full-time teachers that work with the children and also hires part-time UIS students to assist the teachers in their daily work with children and families. The Autism Program Therapy Assistant (posted December 9, 2013)
The Hope Institute for Children and Families in the future seeks to hire a part-time therapist to provide direct on-site therapy under the supervision of licensed/certified clinicians with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for The Autism Program (TAP). The Autism Program Service Network includes over 30 organizations, and twelve training and service centers. Essential functions of this position will be to teach children with ASD using principles of Applied Behavior Analysis.

Brain Dissection Lab
Students in Dr. David Towers’ Introduction to Biopsychology course had the opportunity to dissect sheep brains, which are very similar to human brains. Students typically do not have this kind of opportunity until they get to graduate school. Dr. Towers and Dr. Reminger put this lab together with the assistance of several faculty in the biology and chemisty departments.

The impact of stereotypes on Asian Americans
Dr. Frances Shen, assistant professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois Springfield researches the impact of stereotypes on Asian Americans.
