English as a Second Language Program
The ESL program at UIS supports speakers of other languages with:
- courses that are taught by expert faculty using modern methods
- individualized attention in small class sizes
- supplemental instruction workshops
- conversation practice outside of the classroom
- extracurricular activities that build friendships and a sense of community
- easy transition to UIS degree programs

The University of Illinois Springfield is a small public institution located in one of the most historied city in Illinois. Because of our size we are able to focus on building a community between teachers and learners.
Springfield, IL
Springfield, the state capital of Illinois, is also the state’s fifth largest city. It is located between the metropolitan areas of Chicago and St. Louis. The 16th U.S. president Abraham Lincoln launched his polical career from Springfield.
Visitors (and students during their free time) can discover the city by:
- touring the Old State Capitol Plaza
- exploring the many Abraham Lincoln sites
- wandering through the famous Dana-Thomas House
- strolling through the Old Capitol Farmers’ Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays, mid-May through October)
